TAMPA (May 3, 2018) -- It was an internship in a retirement services department with an investment house that convinced Ryan Adamchak, then a marketing major, to change direction and head into personal financial planning.

Adamchak, who graduated from the Muma College of Business in 2014, now works for a Sarasota firm of which his father, Joseph, is a partner. Ryan Adamchak is a third-generation associate, a string that began with his grandmother, Rita, who started at Merrill Lynch 43 years ago. She retired in 2002 and then was rehired in 2004. Rita now has been fully retired since 2009.

The switch from marketing to financial planning was in the planets – given his pedigree – and once he got a taste of investment advising, he was in.

"While attending classes, I obtained an internship with T. Rowe Price and worked in the retirement plan services department," Adamchak said. "It provided me with an enormous amount of knowledge and solid foundation in the financial services industry."

Joseph Adamchak, a class of '83 аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÄÚÄ»ÐÅÏ¢alumnus with a bachelor's degree in political science, has been in the business of helping families and small businesses with wealth management and financial planning with Merrill Lynch for over 35 years. He welcomed his son into the Adamchak, Bordes & Associates in March 2015.

"Our energy and vision feed off each other," the elder Adamchak said. "You must be coachable in this business and he is a team player truly focused on improving each day."

Away from the office, Ryan and Joseph Adamchak enjoy golfing and attending professional sporting events in the Tampa Bay area. In the office, Ryan Adamchak, who is working towards the Certified Financial Planner designation, has an important job: incorporating the newest technology to enhance the relationships with clients and to provide goals-based financial planning.

"I never thought I would become a partner on my father's team, but it has absolutely been a natural fit," he said. "Learning to work together since my childhood has helped us to complement each other in the office."

"He has instilled the true entrepreneurial spirit in me to build and grow."
