Karina Hensberry has her mind set on mathematics education. Her research centers on deepening our understanding of what it takes to teach math effectively and equitably by examining the ways that teachers support marginalized students to make sense of math. Through the use of computer technology, Hensberry engages students in mathematical practices and uncovers the role that culturally responsive teaching plays in supporting marginalized students. Her work also investigates integrated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education as a means for improving students’ math knowledge and skills.
Hensberry has published dozens of peer-reviewed articles on topics such as supporting teachers to develop effective teaching practices, culturally responsive mathematics pedagogy, interactive simulations as a tool for supporting student engagement, and the role and impact of STEAM-based outdoor education for supporting math learning. Hensberry teaches various graduate and undergraduate courses in math and STEM education.
