Federally Funded Technology Eases Fears for Riders Too Nervous to Take the Bus

A popular tool used in the public transportation industry has entered a new era of GPS capabilities by providing hyper-specific navigation to new transit riders and passengers with visual impairments or cognitive disabilities.

OneBusAway is an open-source app maintained by the non-profit Open Transit Software Foundation that provides real-time information on bus routes, bikeshare programs and water taxi services. Engineers at the 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 (USF) have been fine-tuning the app since its deployment to multiple cities in 2013. As part of a U.S. Department of Transportation-funded project, 新澳门六合彩内幕信息researchers just added 38,000 lines of code to help those weary of taking the bus. It notifies individual passengers how far they are from their destination, when they鈥檙e approaching their stop and the bus鈥檚 geographic position related to streets and landmarks.

Once a rider approaches the general proximity of their destination, the phone will vibrate and deliver an audio recording that repeatedly announces 鈥済et ready鈥 with the message displayed on the screen. When it鈥檚 time for the rider to exit the bus, the phone will react similarly, directing them to 鈥渆xit at the next stop.鈥 Since it鈥檚 open-source, transit agencies, universities and developers can regularly update the app and immediately fix potential glitches.

鈥淧lanning trips and riding public transportation can be particularly daunting for new transit riders, especially those with intellectual disabilities. Transit agencies are also challenged with balancing the demand for paratransit services and its rising costs,鈥 said Principal Investigator Sean Barbeau, PhD, research faculty at the USF Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR). 鈥淥neBusAway providers transit riders the freedom to travel more frequently, attend job interviews and work, and become more involved in the community. It is in the interest of both the transit rider and the transit agency to support technologies that can aid individuals to travel independently using fixed route transit.鈥

Barbeau and the 新澳门六合彩内幕信息research team have two patents on the technology, which are extensions of an app he developed for off-the-shelf flip phones in the early 2000s. The Travel Assistance Device (TAD) was designed specifically for individuals with physical and/or mental disabilities to help them navigate the transit system by using GPS and off sight monitoring by a caregiver. However, 新澳门六合彩内幕信息faced difficulty commercializing TAD due to its small market size. GPS technologies at the time were also far less reliable than they are today.

鈥淚ntegrating this technology into the open-source OneBusAway app avoids sustainability pitfalls traditionally associated with products designed only for users with disabilities,鈥 said Barbeau. 鈥淣ow this feature can benefit any rider who needs help navigating public transit.鈥

OneBusAway currently has over 340,000 active users in ten cities, including Tampa, Florida where the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit led beta testing efforts. To help continuously improve the destination reminders feature over time, the research team developed a feedback tool for riders to rate their experience, as well as simulation software to test the algorithm by reproducing field conditions without having to repeatedly travel the same path. Barbeau says that this technology could be a good companion tool for travel trainers, who are transit agency employees that teach individuals, including those with disabilities, the skills needed to use public transit.

The new technology is located in the 鈥淒estination Reminders鈥 feature in the OneBusAway Android app. It was funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation鈥檚 Center for Transportation Equity, Decisions and Dollars and supported by the Open Transit Software Foundation. OneBusAway is available on iOS and Android devices as well as a personal assistant skill for Amazon Alexa.
