The internship course consists of two components: an academic component that focuses on professional development skills and an on-site learning experience component. The on-site experience is expected to average 10 hours per week for a total of 120 hours over the course of the semester and provide students with valuable industry experience and the ability to apply their knowledge of business/industry practices.

Internship course schedule

The course is structured around the following time periods:

  • Fall semester: August - December
  • Spring semester: January - May
  • Summer semester: May - July

Internship course objectives

The expectation is that students will:

  • Grow and develop professionally
  • Develop a portfolio of experience needed to succeed in business/industry
  • Develop critical-thinking skills
  • Develop communication skills
  • Assess business situations using ethical knowledge and skills

Employer expectations

To participate in the internship course, an employer must:

  • Have a commercial place of business or clearly state that meetings will take place at a commercial place of business;
  • Have a business professional available to mentor the intern on a daily basis, and this professional must commit to developing at least three project experiences for the student and learning objectives related to each of them; and
  • Commit to the evaluation and feedback process being completed in a timely manner.

Unpaid internships will be accepted providing the company provides proof of liability coverage for the student. However, paid internships are common in accounting and will result in more student interest.
